Tjukurpa (pronounced like Chook-orr-pa) is the foundation of Anangu life and society. It has many complex but complementary meanings. Tjukurpa refers to the creation period when ancestral begins, Tjukaritja, created the world as we know it now. It is also the law for relationships between people, plants, animals and the land. It is the past, the present adn the future. It is also the stories that hold this knowledge. Dreamtime' or 'dreaming' is often used to describe the way indigenous Australians see their origins. This translation suggests that the beliefs are unreal and easily forgotten. Tjukurpa is no dream and Anangu do not use the world 'dreamtime' in Anangu languages. There is not one English word that conveys all the meanings which why the the Pitjantjatjara word Tjukurpa is used in the Park. Yankunytjatjara Traditional Owners use the word Wapar (pronunced wop-arr).

The world was once a featureless place. None of the places existed until Tjukurpa ancestors, in the forms of people, plants and animals, travelled widely across the land. Then, in a process of creation and destruction, they formed the world as we know it today. For Anangu the land is inhabited by dozens of ancestral beings. Their journeys and activities are recorded at sites linked by iwara (paths or tracks). These iwara link places that are sometimes hundreds of kilometres outside the Park and beyond Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjarra country. The Mala Tjukurpa, for example, involveds three groups of mala (rufous hare-wallaby people) who travel from the north to reach Uluru. Two groups then flee south and south-east to sites in South Australia. Kuniya Tjukurpa involves the travels of the woma python from the east. Many other Tjukurpa such as kalaya (emu), liru (poisonous snake), lungkata (blue tongue lizard), luunpa (kingfisher) and tjintirtjintirpa (willie wagtail) travel through the Park. Other Tjukurpa affect only one specific area. Many exploits of Tjukurpa involve the creation beings going underground.

The folding and faulting of the earths horizontal layers some 300 million years ago gave rise to what is called today the Macdonnell Ranges - a spectacular mountain range harboring a diverse wildlife population and destination that tourists now travel, to view its ancient gorges and waterways. Alice Springs lies in the middle of this mountain range. The town, simply yet affectionately called 'the Alice', now provides an oasis for visitors to explore this land of extremes. But early settlers were forced to adapt to this arid landscape, as the Arrente Aboriginal people had successfully being doing for tens of thousands of years before their arrival. The harsh birth of the town now carries a proud pioneering heritage - proof of which is in the many unique Australian institutions that were created to deal with the tyranny of isolation and extreme environmental conditions. Institutions such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air and cattle industry - where helicopters instead of horses buzz the outback on muster day!

Alice Springs History

In 1862 explorer John McDouall Stuart after who the Stuart Highway is named following his remarkable exploration feats, led an expedition (his third and final attempt) through the Centre, to the north coast, navigating and mapping the country for white settlement. Following in Stuart's footsteps, the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line from Adelaide to Darwin was completed in 1872 and made it viable for pastoralists to take up leases in the Centre. However, it was the discovery of alluvial gold at Arltunga, some 100 kms east of Alice Springs, in 1887 that provided a population boom for the Centre. In 1872 this small settlement started as a relay station for the Overland Telegraph Line next to a water hole called 'Alice Springs'. Later the town moved to a new location where it was names 'Stuart' after John Stuart until 1933. Subsequently it was renamed Alice Springs in honour of Alice - the wife of South Australia's Post Master General Sir Charles Todd. This harsh birth of the town now carries a proud pioneering heritage - proof of which is in the many unique Australian Institutions that were created to deal with the tyranny of isolation and extreme environmental conditions. Institutions such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, the Ghan Railway line and the cattle industry - where helicopters instead of horses buzz the outback on muster day! Today it has a population of over 27,000 residents.

Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park)

It is situated on the western edge of the George Gill Ranges, 300 kilometres to the north east of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and 310 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Drivers can reach Kings Canyon from Uluru in three hours by taking the Lasseter Highway and Luritja Road. Those with a four-wheel-drive and at least a day's travelling time can take the unsealed Mereenie Loop from Alice Springs. Watarrka National Park contains the western end of the George Gill Range. This scenic landscape of rugged ranges, rockholes and gorges acts as a refuge for many plants and animals, making the Park an important conservation area and major attraction of Central Australia. Kings Canyon features ancient sandstone walls, sculptured by the elements, rising up 100m to a plateau of rocky domes. Watarrka is an important conservation area with rock holes and gorges providing refuge for over 600 species of plants and many native animals. The sheer red rock face of Kings Canyon soars over 100 metres above dense forests of palms, ferns and cycads; sheltering them from the surrounding desert conditions. A moderately challenging six-kilometre walk takes in magnificent views of the Canyon rim, the weathered, buttressed domes of 'the Lost City' and the 'Garden of Eden' - a sheltered valley with permanent waterholes and lush vegetation. The walk is suitable for fit, relatively experienced walkers and can be completed in about three to four hours. For the less energetic, the shorter and easier Kings Creek walk leads into the centre of the Canyon. Derived from an Aboriginal word referring to the umbrella bush that thrives here, Watarrka National Park has been home to the Luritja people for more than 20,000 years. The area was little known to Europeans until recently; Ernest Giles being the first white man to explore the area in 1872.
